OCR: "There's No Business Like Show Business" is the title of one of songwriter Irving Berlin's most popular tunes, and for many American's the thought has also become a way of life. In thousands of communities across the country, citizens have banded together to stage a wide array of theatrical productions. These are not professional actors; in fact, most of the men and women who make up the casts and crews in community theater productions are amateurs and volunteers, donating their time and talent for the fun of it. Nor are most of the community theaters profitmaking ventures; whatever money is left after a show has been presented goes for production expenses, improvements on the theater, or as a reserve for the next production. Most important of all, participation in these community groups is usually open to anyone willing to work. And people are very willing. A survey taken for the Associated Councils of the Arts showed that almost three million Americans are currently active in community theater groups, and five times that many would like to be.
